Hyundai Motor India Ltd is the fully owned subsidiary of the Hyundai Motor Company. It is headquartered in South Korea. It is India's second largest car manufacturer with a market share of 16.2%. The India operations of Hyundai was set up on 6 May 1996. When Hyundai entered India in 1996, there were only5 major auto players including Hindustan, Maruti Suzuki, Tata, Premier, and Mahindra. Daewoo was also there, it had just entered the Indian market with its flagship sedan Cielo. Ford, Honda, and Opel entered the Indian market in 1995.
Before the entry of Hyundai, Maruti Suzuki had almost monopoly over the Indian car market as Tata and Mahindra were only manufacturing utility vehicles in the country. Car makers like Hindustan and Premier were selling cars, but they were uncompetitive and outdated.
