Next-generation Maruti Suzuki Celerio review

The new generation of Maruti Suzuki Celerio is expected to launch in the next year. Let us find out what it has on offer.

Previously, Maruti Suzuki Celerio was launched in India in 2014, and the car has remained mostly same since then. Now, however, there is a new-generation model in the way, that is expected to be a considerable improvement over the current-gen model, especially in terms of interior space, comfort, and equipment. Maruti Suzuki had postponed the new-generation Celerio that was initially scheduled to launch around the festive season this years. Now, the new Celerio is expected to arrive in the Indian market early next year.

Exterior

As seen in spy images, the new-gen Celerio appears bigger both in terms of design and features, with a longer wheelbase and visibly higher ground clearance. The first major update will be its shift from the old platform to Suzuki’s new Heartect architecture which also underpins the new WagonR and S-Presso.

This means that upcoming model is likely to get a more spacious cabin. It also gets a new pair of taillights, projector headlamps, LED DRLs, freshly designed alloy wheels, revised front profile and redesigned rear bumpers and ORVMs with integrated turn indicators. Other notable inclusions which are expected are Automatic climate control, steering mounted controls, etc. Safety features expected to be on offer are ABS with EBD, dual front airbags, reverse camera, seatbelt reminder and rear parking sensors.

Interior

Even the interiors of the new Celerio are updated. The new cabin design looks a bit more modern than the current one with the same 7-inch SmartPlay Studio touchscreen infotainment system on higher variants. The steering wheel and the instrument cluster haven't been modified and are carried over from different Maruti Suzuki models. From the spy shots, we are able to see that there is also a small digital readout slightly below the analogue speedometer which might show you some information. The new-gen Celerio gets manual air conditioning with heater and a garnish around the gear stick.

Also, just like the other company's we can see the updated circular side AC vents, though now they get a polish to highlight them. The centre AC vents are mounted vertically. The central console is available with two cupholders, storage that can store your mobile phone or a wallet, 12V charging socket that can charge your electronic devices and central mounted front power windows. The instrument cluster will also be new although it'll still be semi-digital.

Engine options

The upcoming 2021 Celerio specs will offer a 1.0-L petrol engine. This engine produces 67 bhp of power and a 90 Nm peak torque output. The engine is offered with a 5-speed manual gearbox and  a 5-speed AMT. Considering that Maruti Suzuki’s vehicles are comparatively don’t weigh a lot. This power and torque figure ought to be enough for the new Celerio. Maruti Suzuki will also offer with a factory-fitted CNG option which Maruti calls “S-CNG”.

The company might also add the 1.2-litre petrol engine on the higher variants just like they offer the WagonR with two engine options. The 1.2-litre petrol engine produces 81 bhp of power and peak torque of 113 Nm. If the company decides to do this, the Celerio may be one fun little hatchback because of the peppy engine and less weight.

Pricing

However, the company might launch the new Celerio in India around early-2021 and is expected to start from Rs 4.41 lakh to Rs 5.68 lakh (ex-showroom). Pricing wise, it will be priced almost like the current-gen model. But, it can compete the next-gen Celerio will continue to compete against the Tata Tiago and the Hyundai Santro.
