Mahindra Alturas G4 Review

Alturas G4 is the flagship SUV from Mahindra. It offers power-packed performance, a long lineup of luxury features, and a stunning road presence.

Initially marketed as Ssangyong Rexton, Mahindra Alturas G4 is launched to Indian consumers with a new name and new features to recreate its image in the market as a premium SUV car. It is a fourth-generation of Ssangyong Rexton but winged under the Mahindra badge.

The Alturas G4 continues to challenge players like the Ford Endeavour and BS6 Toyota Fortuner. It will also rival some of the monocoque SUVs such as Skoda Kodiaq, Honda CR-V and Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace.

Alturas G4 appears to be a significant jump over its predecessor. It has introduced a new engine, gearbox and modern design raising up the bar for the car significantly and more significantly it has come up with features that are capable of taking up the competition from the Ford Endeavour and Toyota Fortuner.

Exterior

The Alturas G4 is a big car and doesn’t make sure that the viewers don’t miss its magnificence. Mahindra’s signature grille is intact in this car and immediately catches your attention. To add to its beauty an LED daytime running lamps are inducted. The bumpers are pretty heavy and muscular in shape and a large chrome line acts as the chin and adds to the elegance of the car.

Alturas operated on 18-inch alloy wheels and a very visible rear overhang that is highlighted by two massive curves that make the car appear quite wide, adding to the whole big persona of the vehicle. At the rear end, tail lamps are placed to appear like large wedges on the edges of the car. They are connected by a big chunk of chrome right above the slot for the number plate.

What makes Alturas different from standard Mahindra both in name and design is that the car’s name does not start with “O”, plus it has the minimal number of badges that puts the spotlight on the well-crafted bumper that cuts down the visual weight of the vehicle.

Interior

It may appear huge and boxy on the outside, but it is very well-planned and luxurious on the inside. As soon as you enter you are welcomed by a double toned leather-lined space all around. Be it the lower half of the dashboard or the seats, all are made of it. There are even large strips of it on the door cards.

The car has a touchscreen infotainment system with an 8.0-inch display and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, powered driver’s seat with 3 set memory function and two-zone climate control. The extra oomph comes in the form of a welcome function that adjusts the mirrors and the driver’s seat as soon as you open the door, a seven-inch TFT-LCD  and a 360-degree camera for an all-around view.

The seats are comfortable for long journeys and have ideal legroom of 810mm. The armrest at the center has a pop-out cup holder.AC vent console has a USB port with fast charging capability. The roof is lifted out for the second row for additional headroom. The third row is inadequate and is best reserved for children or short journeys.

Safety Features

Mahindra Alturas G4 Global NCAP & K-NCAP in the crash test have scored a five-star rating, thereby reinforcing the leading position in the SUV segment.

Mahindra Alturas G4 is equipped with nine airbags (the passenger seat, driver seats, driver’s knee, airbags on the sides of 1st and 2nd seat rows and curtain airbags); emergency brake assist (EBA), dynamic stability control (DSC) with active rollover protection, traction control system (TCS), hill hold control (HHC), anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake force limitation (EBL), emergency stop signal (ESS).

Engine Options

The Alturas is offered with a 2.2-litre diesel producing 184bhp/420Nm. The gearing gets higher as you move up the ratios and one can cruise at 80 kmph at just under 2000rpm in the seventh gear. During off-throttle coasting, there is no freewheeling which is a very reassuring feature while going downhill in such a large vehicle.

It takes its power from a 2.2L 4-cylinder motor and can produce a max power of 178bhp and a peak torque of 420Nm.
