Harley-Davidson is back in India with a plan-B

Harley Davidson announced to exit India in September after troubled operations for over a decade. Now American motorcycle major has re-entered the Indian market with Hero.

Hero MotoCorp has inked a distribution agreement with Hayley-Davidson for the Indian market. Now Hero will sell and service Harley bikes in India. This news is a surprise after American bike maker announced to shut shops in India a few weeks before.

"As per the agreement, Hero MotoCorp will sell and service Harley-Davidson motorcycles. It will also sell parts and accessories and general merchandise including riding gear and apparel through a network of brand-exclusive Harley-Davidson dealers and Hero’s existing dealership network in India. As part of a Licensing agreement, Hero MotoCorp will develop and sell a range of premium motorcycles under the Harley-Davidson brand name," Hero said in a regulatory filing today.

This decision has come under 'The Rewire' plan that aims to change the business model of Harley-Davidson in India.

"This arrangement is mutually beneficial for both companies and riders in India, as it brings together the iconic Harley-Davidson brand with the strong distribution network and customer service of Hero MotoCorp," the company further stated.

Harley-Davidson Motor Co. in September decided to quit India, after a troubled stint in the world's largest two-wheeler market. After 11 years of Indian operations, Harley discontinued sales and production in India as a part of its global restructuring.
