The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways introduced new safety rule for child passengers that will be applicable to children who fall between the age of 0-4 years. A law will be passed that will make safety harnesses compulsory for children. The safety harness will be attached from the driver to the child.
The safety harness will be a vest that will be worn by the child, adjustable with a pair of straps. The upper torso of the child is securely attached to the driver.
Under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act 2016, the rules have to meet the requirements as per the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). The harness will have to be adjustable, durable, lightweight, made up of heavy nylon, and designed to hold a weight of up to 30 kg.
The new draft states that the speed of two-wheeler with a child of up to 4 years old will be restricted. Also, any two-wheeler with a child can't exceed the speed of 40 km/h regardless of the speed limit of the road.
This rule is expected to become a law in the next few months. MoRTH has asked for any suggestions or objections.
