Top electric cars to look out for in 2021

From Audi and Volvo to Mahindra, Tata, and Maruti; car makers are all set to launch new electric vehicles in the year 2021.

As electric vehicles have become more popular in the country, the market is expanding. Many electric cars are slated to come out in Indian markets in 2021. The Indian electric vehicles (EV) lately are now looked upon with enthusiasm and optimism. With so much churning happening, finally the car manufacturers are making a shift from internal combustion engines to electric motors.

However, India is still a way behind as compared to foreign markets but with sustained development of EV infrastructure, several companies have hinted that many electric cars are going to come next year in the country.

Let us check out the models that are poised the enter the Indian car market in 2021.

Audi e-tron

The all-electric offering of Audi, Audi e-tron, is also expected to hit the Indian market in 2021, the head of the company's Indian subsidiary Balbir Singh Dhillon told the media earlier. The car will be equipped with a 95kWh battery pack capable of going over 400km+ range in a single charge.

Audi e-tron is likely to be priced at a premium rate of ₹1.50 crore.

Audi e-tron was introduced a couple of years back and it was going to be launched in India in 2020. Since it could not happen this year, it is expected to hit the Indian market in 2021. This car comes with a 95 kwh battery pack with the inclusion of a third motor. It can be charged in just 30 minutes by about 80 percent. It claims a range of about 400 km as well. It is capable of going 363km (preliminary data), a drop of 83km from the standard model. The price of Audi e-tron is likely to be at a premium of ₹1.50 crore.  

Tata Altroz EV

One of India's top carmakers, Tata Motors, is expected to launch the electric version of its hatchback model Altroz in the Indian markets soon. The car has already garnered a lot of attention ahead of its launch. Although the launch date is not decided yet, the car is likely to be launched somewhere in early 2021.

The EV will be equipped with an IP67 rated dust-proof battery capable of running almost 312 kilometres on a single charge. The Tata Altroz EV is expected to be priced at ₹12-15 lakh.

One of India's top carmakers, the Tata Motors EV is a premium zero-emission hatchback. Although the launch date is not decided yet, the car is likely to be launched somewhere in early 2021. Mated with a single-speed gearbox, the car comes with a battery that powers a 300-volt AC motor. The battery charges in 60 min from 0 to 80 per cent through a DC fast charger. When launched, it is likely to be priced from Rs 14 lakh (ex-showroom India).

Volvo XC40 Recharge

Volvo XC40 Recharge is the first fully electric production of the luxury automobile maker. As Volvo starts electrifying its entire range from the smallest SUV onward, it is confirmed that Volvo will launch this eagerly-awaited electric car in India in 2021. It offers a range of about 400 km in one full charge with its 78 kWh battery.

Mahindra eKUV100

The Mahindra eKUV100 is expected to hit the Indian stores in January 2021. The car first showcased at the Auto Expo 2020 is expected to be priced around ₹8.25 lakh, making it the most affordable electric car in India.

The EV will have a 15.9kWh battery pack that supports a fast-charging option and can juice up the battery by up to 80% in just one hour.

The Mahindra e-KUV100 offers a range of 147km with this battery pack.

Mahindra's managing director & CEO Pawan Goenka recently announced that eKUV100 is expected to hit the Indian roads in January 2021. The EV contains a 15.9kWh battery pack that supports a fast charging option with up to 80% in just one hour. This EV offers a range of 147km with this battery pack. At a cost of Rs 8,25,000, it could be one of the most affordable EV in India.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R EV

Maruti Suzuki is expected to be launched in India in September 2021. Although the price is not confirmed, the company has indicated that the electric version of the WagonR could cost upwards of ₹9 lakh in India.

The car is capable of charging up to 80% in just 40 minutes and can offer a driving range of up to 200kms in one charge. Many details of the car have not been revealed yet but it will give a tough competition to other EVs when it comes out.

Jaguar I-Pace

Jaguar I-Pace is expected to launch it's first electric SUV in India in March 2021. It will be powered by two electric motors producing 400PS, backed up by a 90kWh battery pack. It will do the 0-100kmph run in 4.8 seconds. The I-Pace will be offered in three variants: S, SE and HSE. Jaguar I-Pace comes with a 50kW DC charger. It is expected to range about 1 crore.

Along with eKUV100, Mahindra will also launch eXUV300 on roads. The eXUV300 gets a 350V powertrain that the company dubs as ‘MESMA 350.’ The XUV300 electric will go on to become Mahindra’s first high-voltage, high-performance SUV meaning it can challenge a petrol powered SUV with its features, performance and range. The eXUV300 also features a larger pop-up style touchscreen AVN and wireless mobile phone charger. The car is expected to be launched next year and is estimated to be priced at ₹18 lakh.
