Tata surpasses Hyundai in December car sales, becomes second-largest car seller

Tata Motors surpassed Hyundai Motor India and jumped to the second position in retail sales in December, selling 35,300 wholesale units and 40,000 retail units.

Electric car sales have also reached an important benchmark for Tata Motors. In Q3 FY2022, EV sales jumped threefold to 5,592 cars. Electric vehicles accounted for 5.6 percent of monthly sales in the quarter, increasing from 1.8 percent in FY2020.

There were more than 10,000 electric vehicles sold in the first nine months of the fiscal year 2022, and 2,255 in December 2021.

Maruti Suzuki India, the country's biggest carmaker, saw wholesale sales fall almost 11% year on year to 113,851 units.

Hyundai Motor India, India's second-largest carmaker, had its monthly and annual sales drop by 13% and 32%, respectively. Hyundai, the South Korean carmaker, revealed wholesale sales of 32,312 units.

Mahindra & Mahindra also increased its wholesale sales to 15,338 units due to rising demand for its new launches, notably the Thar and the XUV 700. However, the continuous semiconductor shortage is a crucial source of worry for carmakers.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor's wholesale sales grew by 45 percent year-over-year to 10,382 units in December but fell by 17 percent compared to November sales.

Kia Motors India, a new South Korean manufacturer, saw wholesale volumes drop 34% year over year and 45% month over month to 7,797 units.

Skoda Auto India has regained popularity in India because of the Kushaq SUV. We achieved triple-digit growth in our annual sales volumes despite the pandemic and supply constraints that hit the industry and economy," stated Zac Hollis, Skoda Auto India's brand director. While expanding our consumer touchpoints throughout the nation, we have maintained our sharp focus on client centricity.

It will be interesting to see how the Omicron strain and semiconductor concerns affect car sales across the country.
