Report : More electric vehicles registered in Delhi since EV policy launched

On August 7, 2020, the Delhi EV Policy was announced and the incentives helped to reduce the upfront cost of an EV by a big difference. A year since the announcement, we now have analyzed the sales figures to see if the policy has brought any change and the numbers are definitely increasing.

According to Delhi Government, sales of electric vehicles have seen increased volumes against CNG-powered models in recent months. This year in August, about 2603 electric vehicles were sold, which is over than the 1966 CNG-powered vehicles sold during the same period. Interestingly, the trend of increase in number was also repeated in July.

In August, as per figures shared by Delhi government, the share of electric vehicles in new vehicle sales has rose from 1.2 percent from between 2019-2020, to 3.3 percent in 2021 after the announcement of the EV Policy.

Although, the bulk of EV registered in Delhi includes e-rickshaws, followed by electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers. Meanwhile, CNG vehicles sold in Delhi comprise only three-wheelers. However, the number of gasoline CNG passenger cars sold in the capital remain higher.

The state government has decided to give permits for three-wheelers, not yet claimed for autorickshaws only to e-auto applicants, which will soon makes approximately 4000 new electric three-wheelers on Delhi streets soon. Moreover, the Delhi government is also in touch with the central government on easing restrictions on the number of e-buses that can be inducted under the FAME II scheme up to 5,000 of such buses in the capital's public transport fleet in the coming five years.

Also, adding new e-vehicles on the road, the Delhi EV Policy also aims for improving the charging infrastructure. The Delhi Transport Corporation recently signed a MoU with Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL) for installing charging stations and battery changing stations at bus depots and terminals.
