Amid the worsening COVID-19 crisis in the state, Maharashtra RTOs will remain shut till May 1. However, it will still register vehicles and issue permits for essential services.
RTOs in Maharashtra have cancelled all driving license tests and RTO vehicle registration till May 1 due to COVID-19 pandemic. State transport commissioner Avinash Dhakne has confirmed the news on Thursday.
This order will impact the sale of private vehicles in the state and affect the auto sector that is still recovering from slumping economy. However, the state is still registering transport vehicles and completing the pending work online. The directives have been given to register essential services vehicles on priority to meet the demand of medical and other essential services during COVID-19 pandemic.
As per one RTO official, the decision will impact the sale of private vehicles and will cut down the sale of private bikes and cars by up to 4200. People who have already booked vehicles will have to wait for RTOs to re-open to get their automobile registered.
Expired driving license valid till June 30, 2021 in Maharashtra
The Maharashtra transport department has also rolled out a new circular that states driving license, registration certificate (RC), and permits expired before 30 June will stay valid. RTOs will not accept any new application for license renewal, duplicate license, and more till further notice.
However, old applications will be processed on Saarthi software online. Similarly, renewal of fitness certificates will be done only for essential vehicles.
RTO has also banned people from visiting their offices to ensure social distancing.
