Is Honda HR-V Not Coming to India?

Sadly, Honda has decided NOT to launch HR-V in India. This is due to the over-competitive compact SUV market with competitors like Creta, Seltos, Harrier and MG Hector dominating the sales.

In early 2019, Honda HR-V was seen intensively testing on Indian roads. Honda was all set to launch the 2020 HR-V to take on Kia Seltos, Tata Harrier and MG Hector. However, Honda has now announced that it will not be launching HR-V in India.

According to a report published in AutoCar India, Honda has dropped the plan of launching HR-V in India.

The 4.2-metre-long crossover is built on monocoque construction and powered by 1.6-litre turbocharged diesel engine and 1.8-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine.

Why is HR-V not coming to India?

After the success of  WR-V, Honda did a feasibility test to bring HR-V in India. But Honda couldn’t expand the localisation of parts beyond 30 percent in India. It was still dependent on importing 70 percent of the parts from China, Japan and Thailand.

The cost of import and excessive competition in the subcompact SUV sector made the introduction of HR-V a poor business decision.

The current slowdown in the auto sector also contributed significantly to this decision. It was found that it is not feasible or profitable to manufacture HR-V in its Greater Noida plant.

Honda has taken the decision to axe HR-V to cut its losses and focus on its established and successfully running models including City, Amaze and WR-V in India.

Though HR-V would have been a great proposition for the buyers, Indian buyers would have to settle for what's being offered in the market.
