A 64-year old, Droupadi Murmu took oath as the 15th President of India on Monday, 25th July at a ceremony in Parliament's Central Hall in New Delhi. She secured 64% of the total valid votes.
She is the first tribal and second woman to hold the country's highest constitutional office. She was also given a 21-gun salute after which she signed the oath register amid thunderous applause and thumping of desks.
She is from Bharatiya Janata Party as her political background. Her previous position was as the ninth Governer of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021. She was born and raised in Odisha. She is the first person to belong to the scheduled tribe to be nominated for President of India. Also, she is the first governor of Jharkhand to finish her five-year term and become eligible for re-election.
