The procedure to find vehicle registration details is simple and easy to follow. The Government of India has made it possible for citizens to trace bike or car owner details by registration number online. The Centre, through the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, launched a national registry known as VAHAN. It is a central database of all crucial details and currently, it has digitized over 28 crore vehicle data or information.
The primary objective of the Central Government to launch VAHAN is to centralize all information related to driving licences and vehicle registration certificates from the DTOs (District Transport Offices and RTOs – Regional Transport Offices spread across the country.
Below is the step-by-step procedure to check vehicle details by number online through VAHAN:
- Step 1: Visit the official website of VAHAN to check the vehicle owner name.
- Step 2: On top of the page, click on ‘Know Your Vehicle Details’. (at Top Navigation menu)
- Step 3: On the new page, enter the vehicle registration number (Car or Bike Plate Number).
- Step 4: Enter the human verification code and click on ‘Search Vehicle’.
- Step 5: Make a note of the car or bike owner’s name and other details of the vehicle.

Step 1: Enter VAHAN <Space> Vehicle Registration Number. (Example: VAHAN KA01AD8xx2)
Step 2: Send the SMS to 7738299899.
You will receive complete details of the vehicle along with the vehicle owner’s name, RTO details, make and model, RC/FC expiry, insurance details, etc.
