Did You Hear? You can Now Pay Your Traffic Challans Online!

Traffic rules have become stricter, fines have gone up and it has become difficult to not pay attention to traffic rules. But one thing has become easier- paying those hefty challans!

Road accidents have become a menace in India- mainly because traffic rules are not taken seriously, and traffic challans are considered avoidable. To ensure that people follow traffic rules strictly, Traffic Police has introduced Electronic Challan (e-challan) system for more efficient penalisation of ignorant drivers.

What is an 'e-challan'?

Simply put, an e-challan is a digital copy of your regular paper challan that you get from a traffic police officer.
It is just an electronically generated version of the regular challan to reduce the dependency on paperwork and make the process more efficient.

How does the process of e-challan works?

The government has installed thousands of CCTV cameras on city roads that continuously record moving traffic. These cams act as digital cops and record each broken law. In case, a vehicle breaks a signal or is found violating any other traffic law, traffic police takes the screenshot from the CCTV footage, verifies the vehicle number and registers the offence in the records.

Afterwards, the details of owner and the vehicle is obtained from the Regional Transport Office (RTO) database. After getting the details, an SMS is sent on the registered mobile number of the offender. The message includes the time, date and location of the violation.

What happens after you get an e-challan?

Once an e-challan is generated, you get 60 days to pay the fine. In case, you fail to pay the fine within 60 days, your e-challan will move to court and you will be summoned by the court to produce a valid reason for failing to pay the challan within 60 days.

How to Check e-challan Status and Pay?

You can visit https://echallan.parivahan.gov.in/ to check the status of your e-challan online.

You can also check and pay all your pending challans on this website by simply entering your vehicle details. You can use credit/debit card or online banking for making the payments.

Or even better, you can use CarInfo to do everything related to e-challans!

And if you are not that tech-savvy, you can visit the nearest police station to make the payment against your e-challan number.

How do you NOT get an e-challan?

There is no denying of the fact that nobody can escape from CCTV cameras and once the offence is on record, you also lose the leverage of negotiating with traffic cops.

In short, breaking or ignoring traffic rules is NOT something you can get away with anymore.

So, here are a few things that you can do to avoid getting the SMS of e-challan on your mobile phone.

  • Always follow traffic lights.
  • Drive in your lane.
  • Follow the speed limits.
  • Always wear seat belts in the car and helmet on bikes.
  • Take a comprehensive insurance policy to keep yourself safe from accidental hazards.

Happy Driving!
