Automated fitness test for heavy vehicles are mandatory from FY'24

All heavy vehicles will have to undergo an automated fitness test at service stations. Light motor vehicles as well as medium goods and passenger vehicles will have to follow the same process effectively from June 1, 2024.

As per the notification, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) said that the fitness certificate will have to be renewed after every 2 years for vehicles up to 8 years. Whereas, fitness certificate has to be renewed every year for vehicles older than 8 years.

These changes have been made through an amendment on Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 2022 under which the new rules have been brought in.

These are included in vehicle scrapping policy in which a private vehicle can only move on roads after 20 years of first registration and a commercial vehicle more than 15 years. Whereas, increased fitness fees and re-registration would act as a deterrent for an owner to retain old vehicle.
