Pollution Under Control or PUC is a certificate issued to the vehicle owner. It the proof that the vehicle has passed the PUC test and thus, meets the standard rules set by the government to control pollution. It verifies that your vehicle's emissions are in alignment within permissible norms and hence, not harmful to the environment. According to law, it is compulsory for all vehicles to carry an updated PUC certificate for moving on the Indian roads.
Validity and Costs
A PUC certificate contains details about your vehicle such as date of emission test, registration number, serial number of PUC, date of expiry and readings from the test and is provided at the time of its purchase. The new certificate is valid for 6 months only, after which a new certificate would be required. Hence, it is mandatory to get your vehicle take the PUC test every 6 months.
A PUC costs very less varying to Rs 60-Rs 100. It also depends upon the vehicle being tested and its fuel type.
What can happen if you don't hold a valid PUC?
The renewal of the car insurance policy depends upon the updated PUC. If your car is emitting pollution above the mentioned levels and you are not getting it repaired, then your insurer will be unable to renew car insurance policy.
If you do not hold an updated PUC, then you will be fined Rs 1000 for first time offense and it can go upto Rs 2000 for every offense thereafter.
How to get a PUC certificate?
PUC certificate can only be granted to the vehicles that pass the PUC test. You can get your car tested at any petrol banks that is authorized to carry out emission tests. They will issue a certificate if passed, against a nominal fee.
