The 2021 new Hyundai Kona Electric has been revealed with a series of updates. Hyundai has launched the electric crossover with a mild-update for the facelift model and has equipped it with new options. The changes to the appearance of the new Kona electric offer a totally redesigned grille-less front facia. The new front with an amazing appearance that has closed grille features with a pure and clean design. This modern look is now further enhanced by the new LED Daytime Running Lights, which emphasize the car’s wide stance. The front has also get complements by an asymmetric charging port.
Exterior
On the styling front, the most dramatic change is the removal of the grille panel with a pure and clean style, with the EV adopting a smooth front which marks a clear distinction from the regular Kona. This modern look is further enhanced by new LED daytime running lights and redesigned headlights are carried over, as are the wraparound body crease and aerodynamics-enhancing lower air inlets.
The rear end has largely been left untouched, but subtly reshaped lights will help to differentiate it from the previous one. The front is complemented by an asymmetric charging port, a unique feature to the electric which makes a bold statement about driving electricity.
Luckily, it picks up new gloss-black 18-inch aluminum wheels, and matching gloss black exterior and interior trim items for a more menacing appearance. This new night model comes with a black cloth upholstery, a black headliner, and aluminum gas and brake pedals. The new model of Kona Electric is 25mm longer than the previous one. This ensures it has a dynamic look combined with a strong visual stance.
Interior
The cabin is where the new Kona Electric has received a lot of updates. For the very first time, the touchscreen has been updated to come equipped with the big 10.25-inch display and it now also comes with a Hyundai BlueLink update for the higher trim model. The 8-inch touchscreen is currently offered as standard. However, Hyundai has not touched the electric powertrain in the Kona. The new Kona Electric customers can enjoy the new Bluelink upgrade, which permits them to control their vehicle with their smartphone or audio to make their drive more convenient and enjoyable.
Engine
Like its predecessor, the new EV provide two totally different zero-emission battery-electric powertrains, with no compromises on performance. Mechanically, the long-range version with a 64kWh battery features an electric motor that delivers maximum power of 204bhp for the 483 km range. The basic version has a battery capacity of 39.2kWh, with the motor delivering 136bhp for the 304km range. The long-range battery version offers a better and maximum speed of 167kmph with the standard-range battery version giving 155kmph. Both powertrain versions offers 395 Nm of immediate torque.
Charging the lithium-ion polymer battery from 10 to 80 percent only takes about 47 minutes using a 100kW direct current (DC) fast charger while a 7.2kW charger would take 6 hours to charge from 10 to 100 percent. This new EV model provides an optional 10.5kW three-phase on-board charger, offering significantly shorter charging times by using public three-phase AC charging stations with a private compatible wall box at home. Additionally, buyers will also have an option of charging their vehicle at a compatible regular household power socket using the ICCB-cable (in-cable control box).
Safety
Upgraded Hyundai Smart Sense features Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA) and Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA), which not only provide just warnings to drivers, but also apply the brakes wherever necessary. Another new feature has been added to this new model is to Leading Vehicle Departure Alert (LVDA), which alerts the driver when they don't react fast enough when the vehicle ahead of them starts moving.
In addition to this, it is also available with eCall service, a feature that automatically alerts emergency services if the airbags are deployed or the eCall button is pressed. Additions have been made to the advanced safety features onboard such as blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, leading vehicle departure alert, rear-seat alert, and safe exit warning.
Price
The Kona Electric has priced between Rs 23.75 lakh to Rs 23.94 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The company has not commented on the arrival of the new 2021 Kona Electric yet. However, it is likely that the new model will arrive in India soon.
